Bayshore Center at Bivalve

Located at 2800 High St, Port Norris, NJ 08349, The Bayshore Center at Bivalve serves the community. It is a non-profit organization that promotes environmental education, advocacy, and programming. Its mission is to provide stewardship for the Bayshore Region through educational programs, a museum, and an oyster schooner. The Center’s headquarters are located at the waterfront in historic shipping sheds. There, visitors can take part in programs that explore the history of Delaware Bay. The center also has an oyster shell bagging activity and a pirate boat for children to play on.

The Bayshore Center at Bivalve is also home to the Delaware Bay Museum & Folklife Center. The museum features exhibits that tell the story of New Jersey’s oyster industry and the bay’s history. The center also offers educational programs and sails on the historic oyster schooner AJ MEERWALD. The center also operates an oyster cracker cafe. The cafe is open Thursdays through Sundays. It serves oysters, sandwiches, and other foods.

The center’s mission is to inspire people to explore the history of New Jersey’s Bayshore region and the important role that oysters play in its ecology. AJ MEERWALD is the center’s own oyster schooner. The ship sails to ports throughout the region. The ship was built in 1928. It was also recently renovated by Clark & Eisele Traditional Boatbuilding in Belfast, Maine. The ship serves as the centerpiece of the Bayshore Discovery Project. It is also New Jersey’s official tall ship. The ship is owned by the Bayshore Center at Bivalve. The ship is available for public sailings throughout the year.

The Bayshore Center at Bivalve also has an Oral History program. This program serves both visitors and students and is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the Bayshore Region. Visitors can learn about the history of the oystering industry in New Jersey and Bayshore by talking with a volunteer.
